Children’s Book Review: “Jeannie’s Crab Lake Winter Tales”

“Jeannie’s Crab Lake Winter Tales”

By David Mulford. Illustrated by Christine Cathers Donohue

Jeannie’s Crab Lake Winter Tales is a magical, mesmerizing story not to be missed by children and their families. They will eagerly turn the pages, anxious to learn what happens next.

In this series of incredible short stories, you will love meeting the endearing creatures, each with their own personality and talent. For example, the beautiful, scarlet cardinals specialize in broadcasting news to all of their animal friends in the area, while Starnose the mole meticulously decorates cakes. When are they most excited? When their lovely friend, Jeannie, is coming for a visit. Jeannie enjoys a special bond with animals – a pact. Christmas is her favorite time to visit because the animals only speak with her during the winter season, but during summer visits they still happily frolic around her and observe.

One particular summer, when Jeannie and her family visited their cabin, she was troubled. What caused her concern? She and her family planned to build a new cabin and she worried her wonderful animal friends would be displaced by the construction activities. How could she make them understand? The solution came in the form of locating the wise, elderly beaver, Belknap. Although he couldn’t express his thoughts, he listened. Belknap chatted with the cardinals and recruited them to spread the word among the animals so they were well informed about Jeannie’s plans. Problem perfectly solved.

Not only is the story enchanting, but the gorgeous illustrations connect you with the characters. You’ll cheer for them when they celebrate and worry for them during the times of trial. I am confident this tale will not disappoint. I highly recommend it. My rating for Jeannie’s Crab Lake Winter Tales is a well-deserved 5-stars.
